Valentina Oropeza is a Venezuelan journalist with 20 years experience. She currently covers the United States and Latin America for global audiences at the BBC. She has worked as a reporter, investigative editor, special envoy, foreign correspondent, radio host and documentary producer.

She founded two investigative units in Venezuelan media and has led investigations that have received more than a dozen awards such as the King of Spain Award, the Roche Award and the award for journalistic excellence from the Inter-American Press Association.

She has been a grantee of the Pulitzer Center and fellow of the World Press Institute at Saint Paul University. She studied Journalism at the Andres Bello Catholic University in Caracas and has a master’s degree in International Relations at the Barcelona Institute of International Studies in Spain. She also attended to the Diploma Course in Development Journalism at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi.

AWARDS

2020. Malaria Times in Venezuela

Won the recognition for journalistic excellence in the health category of the Inter-American Press Association and the Roche Award in the category of solutions journalism.

2019 - Vivir sin agua

Obtained first place in the Ipys Venezuela investigative journalism award and in the category of web report of the year in the Monseñor Pellín award.

2016. Radiografía Misión Vivienda

Won first place in the Ipys Venezuela investigative journalism award.

2015. Justice to the Fallen

Was recognized with second place in the Ipys Venezuela investigative journalism award.
